artist statement

ALSO could be a reversal of what we understand land to be. How we use it, how we live and die on it and then how we rest within it. ALSO is a transplantation of the living grass from Sutton to a gravesite on the outskirts of Goulburn. It is a chance to stop and to think about how we touch this land and how in turn we are touched by it. The Read family came to Australia in the mid 1800's. They settled between Goulburn and Canberra. Hugh Read and Ethel Read, my mother's grandparents and their nine children, established Oakhill, a property located in Sutton. This land is still owned by the Reads. Over the past 6 months I have researched family and local history. Looking at written, officially recorded and remembered knowledge. This work is dedicated to Lorraine Jean (Hardy) Backen.
